Is the tr command broken in astksh.20131010? if I call it sometimes it
starts to consume a lot of memory and sometimes it does not.

this problem is being tracked down
dgk and I are at a computing disadvantage for a short transition period
if anyone could track this one down it would be appreciated

Isn't this the same problem as the valgrind hits reported by Roland
Mainz? Coincidentally the 8GB allocations only happen together with
the valgrind hits. IMO this is related to the recent mbstate_t
changes.
